Marge’s Monthly Must-Haves, Nov. 2016

Happy first day of December, everyone! Is it just me, or did November fly by? I was so busy this month that I don’t have a ton of new faves, but I do have a few to share with you!

Essence Sunrise eye shadow palette—This is the gorgeous little set of baked shadows I mentioned in this post. It’s not produced anymore, but I found it brand new on Poshmark, and I’ve been wearing it pretty frequently. The yellow is my favorite!

Elf eyeliner pencil—I’ve rediscovered my love for good ol’ fashioned pencil liners, thanks to this mini pencil that came in an an Elf Halloween set. I’m in love with how smoothly it glides on—I’ve been wearing this every day.

Bite lipstick in Squid Ink—I’m counting this as one of my faves even though I only wore it a few times. I love it. It’s a beautiful blue-black lipstick I purchased with my VIB 20% off coupon  and is so creamy! A++ in my book.

It was a little on the spendier side, but I think it’s worth splurging when you’re considering buying a black lipstick—if you bought it for cheap, it will definitely look cheap when you apply it. Word to the wise.

Moroccan oil—this was a freebie from my mom. I always spray some sort of oil in my hair when I straighten or curl it to give it some moisture and keep it smooth, especially because my ends get so dry. This one smells so good, and it’s fun to switch up your beauty products every once in a while.

What were your November faves? Let me know!

Marge’s Monthly Must-Haves, Sept. 2016

Hello, everyone! My apologies for such a late September favorites post; I’m still playing catch-up from the wedding.

OGX coconut oil hydrating hair mist—I got this to tame and smooth my frizzy hair, hoping for the best because I haven’t had much luck with hair oils in the past. But this! This will keep my hair straightened and sleek all day, and it makes it look so much healthier. And it smells incredible.

Lush products gifted to me at my bridal shower—My dear bridesmaid Lisa spoiled me with a plethora of Lush products for my bridal shower, namely Mask of Magnaminty, Charity Pot hand lotion, Vanillary perfume, and two bath bombs.

This was by no means my introduction to Lush; rather, she fed my addiction because I hadn’t tried any of these products. I mean, I frequently buy their bath bombs, but she got me some I’d never tried before.

However, the Mask of Magnaminty is definitely my favorite out of everything. It smells so fresh, feels good on my skin, and seems to calm my acne. An A++ in my book.

Little Lush bundle!
Gelous nail gel & Gelous ridge filler—Purchased these weekend before our wedding on a whim after reading a Pinterest tutorial, hoping to achieve gel-like nails for the big day because I didn’t want to absolutely destroy my nails with a real gel manicure.

The tutorial claimed it’s like the real thing and will last a whole week, and all I can say about my own results is wow. I will never not use this when I paint my nails. Not only did my polish last the whole week with very minimal chipping, but it achieved that “plumping” effect that many gel-like polishes claim to possess but typically don’t.

Seche Vite fast-dry top coat—This was also suggested in the tutorial. It smells horrible, but your nails will be dry in like two seconds. For someone as restless as me who always fucks up their polish when it’s wet, this is a miracle product. I’m never going without this top coat ever again!

The Balm’s timeBalm® foundation—My new favorite lazy-day foundation. I apply this with a beauty blender and it looks great. It has excellent coverage and stays in place all day.

What were your favorite products in September?

Marge’s Montly Must-Haves, Aug. 2016

Hey there, everyone!
I hope August treated you well and that you tried out some fabulous new products. I had pretty good luck this month, with a total of five new must-haves that I wanted to share with you. So without further ado, here are the August faves!

1. NYX matte lipstick in the shade Euro Trash—I’d been looking everywhere for this after seeing it on Pinterest, but every time I went into Ulta, they didn’t have it. Until now.

I normally stay away from NYX lipsticks (except their liquid ones) because they go on too thin and smell oddly plastic-y. But I’ve been really happy with this matte one because it doesn’t possess any of the aforementioned properties. It’s a subtle, almost-nude color that is perfect for days I don’t feel like meticulously crafting the perfect red pout.

2. NYX tinted brow mascara—this is an oldie that I’ve been using on a more regular basis lately. (I even had to buy a new one!) It’s a tinted gel on a mascara wand that sets your brows after filling them in. I’ve found it also works well to shape your brows on a lazy day when you don’t feel like filling them in but still want them to look somewhat done. Gives them a little more oomph, you know? I use the brunette shade.

3. Garnier Micellar water—I’ve been using this every night after using a sample of micellar water I received in my Ipsy a few months back. It removes your makeup AND cleanses/moisturizes your face at the same time. How cool! I love this because it removes so many steps from my nightly routine, and it doesn’t leave my face super oily like some makeup removers do.

4. Exuviance Eye Contour Cream—I’ve been looking for a good eye cream, and the saleswoman at Ulta was REALLY pushing this at me—especially when I mentioned wanting to lift the hooding on one of my eyes. She claimed using it every day and it working wonders. She claimed a woman she knows in her 70s has been using it for years, and it got rid of the sags over her eyelids.

I carried it around the store for a while, hemming and hawing, not wanting to spend $70 on a 5 fl oz bottle of eye cream that might or might not work. Yikes, right? Being the thrifty woman I am, I whipped out my phone and checked Amazon and eBay, where I found I could purchase it for a fraction of the price: $30. Much better.

I can’t really tell if it’s doing any lifting (only been using it for a few weeks so far), but it feels super nice on my eyes in the morning and before bed. It’s not oily, and it absorbs into my skin fast, so it gets an A+ in my book.

5. No Bleeding Lips lip liner—I don’t know where this product has been all my life. After a long day at work, my cupid’s bow is still sharp as a knife. Do yourself a favor and pick this up from Sephora! It’s waterproof AND transparent!

Petite person perks!
Bonus: These dreamy overalls—Ok, I know this isn’t technically a beauty item. But I found these in the children’s section of Sears, and, well, it’s really hard to find flattering overalls (or overalls in general), and when you can fit into a girls’ size 16… you really have no choice but to buy them.

They have a slim-fit leg and are dark-wash denim. And they were half off, so I got them for $20! These are definitely going to Ireland with me. (Also, if you guys are interested in a post about shopping the children’s section, I can totally make that happen. Just saying.)

What were your favorites this month?

Marge’s Monthly Must-Haves: July 2016

Hey, everyone! As my wedding draws ever nearer, I’m finding myself purchasing even more beauty products with the excuse “I can wear this for the wedding!” And that’s pretty much what happened this July. Whoops.

I’m doing my own makeup for the big day though, so it’s a good excuse, right? Right.

Let’s get started with this month’s faves, shall we?

First up is Soap & Glory—I’ve been waiting for this line to show up in Ulta, and the day finally arrived! I was so overwhelmed by all the options that I limited myself to only two purchases: the Orangeasm body wash and the Righteous Butter bronzing lotion “with tanwrap technology.” And I gotta say, I’m in love with both.

The body wash smells so fresh and invigorating (even my fiancé loves it!) and it foams and froths well. The lotion actually DOES make my legs look tanned, and not in a baked-looking, orange way.

“Will you wear this for the wedding?” you’re probably think-asking.

Yes. Yes, I think I will, you beautiful reader, you.

Next up is Makeup Revolution’s Blushing Hearts  Goddess of Faith highlighter—I saw this on Pinterest and knew I had to try it for the wedding (for science), and when I got to Makeup Revolution’s website and saw how amazing their products are, I knew I had to order a few others (you can read about the haul here).

But let’s talk about this highlighter. First of all, cute box, right? Kind of reminds me of the Sweethearts blusher/bronzer from Too Faced. And it’s so shimmery. I always accidentally go overboard on this product when doing my makeup—you hardly see it on the brush, but then you brush it on, and BAM. SO SHINY. I PROMISE I’M NOT GREASY, I JUST WENT OVERBOARD. Heh.

The next favorite of mine is the Sun Bunny bronzer from Too Faced—this is a sample I got from Sephora by redeeming some of my points. I’m not big on bronzers, etc. but I trust Too Faced and figured I’d give it a try. I’m pretty dang wowed by it, guys. So much that I’m planning on wearing it for my wedding (surprise).

And of course, my July Ipsy Glam Bag. I’m ridiculously smitten with everything I got: Delectable by Cake hand cream in the scent lemon & cream, an angled brush, TreStique highlighter crayon, an Ofra lip liner, and a Meet Matt(e) Trimony eyeshadow from The Balm. And of course, the adorable holographic bag this month—swoon! (I’m going to have a hard time deciding which Ipsy bags to use for honeymoon!)

Nice to meet you, Matt(e).

I loved the mini eyeshadow so much that I indulged and purchased the whole Meet Matt(e) Trimony palette when it was up for the Ipsy offer of the day—it was a total steal at $22, a whopping 40% off the original price. The shades are so pigmented and creamy; I don’t regret my purchase one bit. I’ve been wearing it nonstop since it arrived.

Mine arrived a little dented and smudged, but no biggie.

…and I’ll probably continue to wear it into the foreseeable future.

What products did you swoon over this month? I’d love to hear!

Marge’s Monthly Must-Haves: June 2016

Hello, everyone! Once again, my monthly must-haves is a tad late because life gets in the way sometimes (especially when you’re planning a wedding). So without further ado, here are my must-haves for June 2016. Enjoy!

Witch hazel —Do you guys know about witch hazel and how great it is? No? Let me tell you. I originally picked this up because I had some sort of stress-induced infection on my lips (TMI, sorry), and I read that witch hazel is a natural astringent (tightens skin) and kills bacteria. It practically healed my lips overnight.

I’ve since been using in on my face nightly as a toner, and on any acne problem areas. It’s apparently also good for reducing stretch marks, but I have yet to try it for that. The plain, unscented witch hazel (roughly $2 at any drugstore) smells a little funny, but it’s not unpleasant. Kind of earthy. Thayer’s also makes it infused with many different things—rose, lavender, and aloe vera, but it’s harder to find and is triple the price.

NYX matte finish setting spray—Remember a few months ago when I tried the setting spray by Wet N Wild? It was awesome, but it didn’t last long. So I picked up this one by NYX (a brand a mostly trust). My mom is even hooked on it!

Hard Candy It’s Raining Men (Top 10 Trendsetters eyeshadow palette)—I mean, c’mon. This packaging is adorable. I’ve had decent luck with Hard Candy in the past, so I decided to pick this up. Plus I didn’t own any green/gold or purple shadows, and I wanted something to make my green eyes pop. They work pretty dang well!

Physician’s Formula Conceal Rx—This is a concealer I picked up on my “I’m feeling sad so I’m going to buy makeup” excursion to Walmart. I Love physician’s formula. So much. It’s my favorite drugstore brand because it looks high-end and is relatively affordable.

This has been excellent for covering any red areas or blemishes on my face, but I was hoping it would conceal dark circles better. No such luck. (I’m considering trying GinZing for dark circles next.)

Becca foundation—This was given to me by my sister’s roommate in our last secondhand beauty swap. And I was a little wary of it at first. I didn’t realize that Becca is a brand sold at Sephora and Ulta, but I tried this and ended up liking it a whole lot. I’ve been wearing it for the past couple months, and now I’m eager to try some of the other products (like the Champagne Pop highlighter! Swoon!)

Urban Decay lipstick in Matte Temper—this is a beautiful orangy-red matte lipstick that I picked up from the clearance section of the JCP Sephora for only $11 (!!!). I regret not picking up a few other shades, because this formula is fantastic—it goes on creamy and light, doesn’t feel gooey or sticky, and isn’t drying. And it smells like chocolate!

And last but not least, here is my ipsy glam bag:

I wasn’t too thrilled with June’s bag—it wasn’t too cute, and I didn’t really like many of the products except for the Urban Decay eyeshadow. But I did get a day and night cream in my bag this month from some points I redeemed, and that was alright! And the Hey Honey eye contour cream has become a fast favorite.

Well, there were more must-haves this month than I thought there were! Have you guys tried any of these products/what do you think of them? What did you get in your subscription box/bag last month?

See you soon for July’s faves! 😬 💋

April and May Marge’s Monthly Must-Haves

Another better-late-than-never post? Sure, why not. Please bear with me while I play catch up—things are still a little crazy around here, between the move and attending weddings and planning our own. (We’ve reached the four-month mark—holy cow, you guys!)

April and May ipsy Glam Bags:

While I’m not smitten with the pouch itself for April, I loved practically everything that came in my bag.

The concealer, in particular, was a welcome relief. With the flooding to my apartment, I had limited access to the makeup in my vanity, and thus had to go sans concealer for a few weeks—until ipsy sent me some!

Other notable mentions are the blending brush, eyeliner (I haven’t had to buy eyeliner since last September, thanks to ipsy), the hair repair oil (haven’t tried it yet but looking forward to), and the Tarte lippie (which I will discuss further below).

I have a sneaking suspicion ipsy knows my favorite color…

My May bag was nice too—I got a brush for the third month in a row (love!), and since this is a contouring brush I probably should learn how to properly sculpt my face now. The Smashbox mascara is awesome, but you probably already knew that already. And the Hibiskiss chapstick is fantastic—it smells absolutely delicious and leaves a nice stain on the lips. I did like the pouch for this month too, but I’m getting too many. I might cancel (gasp!) after my June bag arrives.

Tarte lipstick. While this came in my ipsy, I think it deserves its own spotlight outside of the Glam Bag. This is the first lipstick ipsy has sent me that I’ve continually worn (mostly because the color isn’t a bright pink, like I’m almost always sent). It’s more of a rosy red than a pink. It has peppermint in it, and it glides on so smoothly.  An A+ in my book.

Better Than Sex Mascara. This was another purchase because of flood damage to my apartment and limited access to my stuff. But I figured, why not treat myself to a non-drugstore mascara and try a waterproof one for the wedding while I’m at it? The girl at Sephora recommended this one to me, and I can’t sing its praises enough. I like to layer it with my Smashbox X-Rated mascara ipsy sample for maximum volume.

The Balm’s Meet Matte Hughes liquid lipstick in the shade Devoted. I tried this for my April Things I’m Going to Put on My Face (For Science) and fell in love. It’s creamy and doesn’t transfer or feather. You can read more about it here(link).

Bag Balm. This is essentially a medicated balm, kind of like Carmex but not as foul smelling. It was my BFF this month when my lips were painfully chapped and split. And it comes in this cute little green tin!

Until next month,

—Marge 💋

March Faves

Hello, everyone! Spring is finally here, and I’ve found myself using a lot of products I’ve had stashed in my vanity for months now. A sort of spring cleaning, if you will, to decide what’s worth keeping. And I found a few new favorites. But first, let’s talk about my March Glam Bag.

My March Ipsy Glam Bag
I was about to cancel my subscription after March, but then I ended up being really pleased with almost everything that came in my bag this month (Well, except for the NYX Liquid Suede in bright pink. I don’t know how many times I have to tell Ipsy that I do NOT wear pink before they get the message.) Highlights include this pretty coral eyeshadow, the loose-powder brush (so soft!), and a blow-dry hair straightening serum.

e.l.f jumbo lip gloss stick
I picked this up in December at the Dollar Tree — a total score — but I’ve been wearing it a lot more lately. It has peppermint in it, so it makes your lips feel all tingly! The color isn’t super pigmented, which is nice for days where I want to be a little more casual but still sport my signature color. And despite the name, it’s more of a lipstick crayon than a gloss.

Mary Kay crème lipstick in Really Red
This is another lip color I’ve had for some time. Ideally I’d wear this or Revlon’s Fire and Ice at my wedding if I had  something to set it, but, alas, I don’t. I like this because it complements my skin tone well. (I think I’m discovering I’m more of an orange-red than a blue-red? Colors are hard, guys.)

 Milani Baked Blush
I’ve had this stashed in my vanity since the summer, but it’s been getting a lot of use lately. It’s in the shade Berry Amore, and is has some beautiful shimmery bronze packed in too. I’ve only seen Milani products at Fredmeyer and Walmart (and occasionally Target), but from my limited experience, it’s a pretty solid brand.

It’s 10 Miracle Leave-In Product
I always dread combing out my hair after I wash it. It’s time consuming. It’s tangly. It sucks.I’ve tried different leave-in conditioners and detangling sprays, but I haven’t had much success with them. It still takes me 15 minutes to comb my hair out, and it hurts.

This is by no means a cheap product (the travel size alone is $11), but like the name suggests, it is a miracle in a bottle. I spray this is my hair—my incredibly thick and long hair that reaches more than halfway down my back—and let it sit for five minutes or so, and combing my hair out is a cinch. And it leaves it so soft and healthy!

Wet ‘n’ Wild Picture Perfect Setting Spray
I picked this up for my weekend foundation (aka the drugstore stuff I’m trying to use up) because I hate when it looks splotchy toward the end of the day. It works really well, and I’m considering trying it over lipstick in relation to Things I’m Going to Put on My Face (For Science).

Dr. Teal’s Avocado Super Moisturizer Foaming Bath
If you don’t already know, I am a huge advocate for two particular bath and body brands: Lush and Dr. Teal’s. And I am also a huge advocate for taking more bubble baths—they’re a good way to remind yourself that you matter.

This is a brand-new product from Dr. Teal’s, and I’m completely smitten with it. I loved their foaming baths already, and with the added avocado oil? Simply heaven. It leaves your skin so moisturized and soft, which I love because I have pretty dry skin.

And that’s all for now, folks. What products did you swoon for this month? I’d love to hear!

Until next time, stay fabulous!

February Faves ’16

Hello there, dear reader! As you’re probably aware, March is about half over. I’ve had this typed up and sitting on my computer since the last week of February, just procrastinating taking the pictures and getting wrapped up in other projects. But here it is, in all its glory, yours for the reading: my February favorites.

February in the Portland area is pretty gloomy and dreary, what with all the rain. And I can feel spring lurking around the corner, putting me in the mood for bright colors, yearning for sunshine, and dreaming of vacations. And, well, I found visions of these through retail therapy to get me in the mindset for better weather. Here are my top favorite things from this month that really took the cake and partially sated my hunger for sunshine.

Lush No Drought dry shampoo
This is probably my favorite product of the whole month. It is hands-down the best dry shampoo I’ve ever used. I thought using a dry shampoo that doesn’t come in an aerosol can would be tricky and messy, but it’s really not. You squeeze the bottle to puff the shampoo out, and then just brush/massage it in to your roots. And it smells summery and so incredible—limes!

Lunatick Cosmetics’ Supernatural palette
This was my favorite cosmetics purchase this month. Lunatick had a 40% off winter sale, so I knew I had to snag this. It’s got five different eyeshadows inside (four of which are matte), and the mirror on the lid is shaped like a bat! Which, if any of you know me well, you’ll know bats are my favorite animal. I like this palette because its burgundys and grays are a nice alternative to most of the browns in the Naked palettes I have. Plus, it’s shaped like a coffin and has an Ouija board theme. Can’t go wrong there.

Originally I was on the hunt for the perfect scent to wear at my wedding (which I did find!), but with Sephora offering triple points on fragrance through Valentine’s day, I knew I had to get something additional to spritz in the meantime. I’ve had multiple friends recommend Marc Jacobs’ Daisy to me, so I splurged (and accidentally bought the really ugly limited edition black bottle). But the scent is the same, and now I don’t think I can go a day without it—there’s something about a spritz of fragrance in addition to my usual swipe of lipstick makes me feel sophisticated and put-together.

Spring goodies in the Target One Spot
The sunhat was only $5 and I am totally smitten with it. And I’m especially wowed at the price—sunhats at Target usually fall into the $20 range. Give me a thick book and a beach towel, and I’m all set!

The travel cup has me pumped for spring and taking iced coffee to work. I cold brew my own at home during summer because I’m a cheapo but still need my fix.

Heart-shaped sunglasses
I’d be lying if I said this was my first pair of heart-shaped sunglasses. I also have a champagne-colored pair. Even though I talk a lot of junk about looking professional and polished and whatnot, I do ultimately think that fashion should be fun, if a little childish at times. And accessories like these are just that!

New planner
Last week I went to mark our wedding date in my planner…but October was nowhere to be seen because it’s a 2015–16 July–June planner. And since the year is still fairly new, there was still a good selection of cute planners at the store. I made sure to get a complete 2016 one this time, since I’m out of school now and have a big-girl job that doesn’t require planning around the summer. This one is the perfect mix of classy-cool meets ’90s prints. Never mind that I have three planners at the moment. It’s not important. (They each have their own purpose, okay? Sheesh.)

Cameron’s Books & Magazines
This is hands-down my new favorite used bookstore in the Portland area. I got a whole stack of Hermann Hesse books for $2 each, not realizing there was a Siddhartha copy shoved in that I already had (not the first time I’ve purchased multiple copies of a particular book). This place is used-book heaven. I got a total of seven books for only $22 dollars. A total steal.

And though I was dreaming of sun this whole month, the reality is that it rained almost every single day. And used bookstores are like home on a drizzly afternoon.

My original intent was to do this favorites roundup every month, but I’m trying to spend less in order to save more so J. and I can to take the honeymoon of our dreams, so this might not happen as regularly as I’d like until after October (or until I buy some cute inexpensive travel things for the honeymoon, which I totally haven’t already started doing…). But I’ve been selling on eBay, so that lightens the load a little, eh?

Until next time, stay fabulous!
